New Poetry Hub Launches at Farnham Library – A Celebration of Words and Community

Updated: Apr 11

The Surrey Poet Laureateship brings its countywide initiative to Farnham, with the support of the Mayor of Waverley and an enthusiastic local crowd.

Farnham Library has become the newest home of poetry in Surrey, with the launch of a vibrant new Poetry Hub led by The Surrey Poet Laureateship. The initiative, which has already seen success in other parts of the county, officially opened its doors in Farnham two weeks ago—and the response has been overwhelming.

The launch event, attended by the Mayor of Waverley, brought together poets, readers, and community members for a joyful evening of shared words and connection. Photos from the event show a room full of warmth, laughter, and heartfelt verses.

The Poetry Hub is designed to offer an open, inclusive space where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together to explore poetry—whether by writing, listening, or simply soaking in the creative atmosphere.

"It’s great to have a hub here in Farnham,” one local poet commented. “It was a really inviting atmosphere and I can’t wait to come back.”

The Surrey Poet Laureateship, the UK’s first countywide laureateship, has a bold mission: to promote the art of poetry across every corner of Surrey. Through its expanding network of hubs, the organisation is bringing poetry into everyday spaces—libraries, schools, care homes, prisons, and mental health settings—making it accessible to all.

The Farnham Hub is the latest step in that journey. With regular gatherings planned, it’s set to become a cornerstone of the town’s cultural life, encouraging creativity and connection through the written and spoken word.

Founder Adam Gary said:"We’ve been blown away by the local response. Farnham has welcomed the Poetry Hub with open arms, and we’re excited to watch it grow into something truly special for the town."

Photos from the launch capture the spirit of the event and the energy of a community ready to embrace poetry as part of its cultural identity.

The Poetry Hub is open to all and will continue to run regular sessions at Farnham Library. For more information, upcoming dates, or to get involved, visit https://www.surreypoetlaureateship.org/hubs or follow @surreypoetlaureate on social media.
